Remote Access
Up one levelRead here to find out how to implement a remote login, i.e., logging onto a distant computer to use the documents on it, from your very own computer.
- Virtual Network Computing (VNC)
- What it is and what makes it different from other computer systems.
- Using VNC with SSH
- Read this to know how to 'tunnel' the VNC protocol through SSH, to provide more security to your connection.

- Using ssh
- Secure Shell Client (remote login program)
- X Windows
- X Windows is a distributed Graphical User Interface (GUI) environment. In other words, you can run a program on a UNIX machine, but have the window appear on your local machine. This gives you the full functionality of using the graphical interface, while still having the power of a large UNIX computer.
- Computer windowing system
- X Window System (commonly X11 or X) is a networking and display protocol which provides windowing on bitmap displays. It provides the standard toolkit and protocol to build graphical user interfaces (GUIs) on Unix-like operating systems and OpenVMS, and is supported by almost all other modern operating systems.
- Running X window on Microsoft Windows using X-Win32.
- The Social Sciences Computing Services has licensed X-Win32. To get the software installed follow the instructions here. Once installed there are a series of steps that can be followed to create a connection.
- Running X window on Microsoft Windows using VNC
- UNIX applications with a graphical user-interface require the use of X-windows or other remote display software when connecting from a remote location. VNC on Windows systems is currently supported.
- Using X- windows from an Apple computer
- UNIX applications with a graphical user-interface require the use of X-windows or other remote display software when connecting from a remote location. the X-windows (using Apple X11) on Macintosh computers is currently supported.

- Using VNC for graphical access to CBIF
- For client computers that lack an X11 server, vnc provides a means of interacting with CBIF resources using graphical interfaces. VNC may also be useful for systems that provide an X11 server, but in most cases X11 will be preferable. This document outlines the basic steps of working with vnc.
- Copying files between computers
- In many instances you will need to copy files from one computer system to another. This guide introduces the commonly used programs for accomplishing this: scp and ftp.
