Graphical User Interface

Find out how you can take advantage of the graphical resources presented by the Facility servers from you own workstations.

All of the Computational Biology Facility workstations use the X Windows System to display graphical information and to control the operation of software.  Consequently, any user can control and display results from programs running either locally or remotely on any of the Facility servers.  Each workstation is truly a window into a powerful network of computational capability.

Although Mac OS X provides the same capability natively, earlier versions of the Mac OS and no versions of Microsoft Windows do so. However, users of those operating systems can also take full advantage of the graphical resources presented by the Facility servers from their own workstations.  Doing so requires use of an alternative windowing communication protocol, vnc (Real VNC, Ltd., 2005).Clients for both Mac and Windows machines are available and may be easily installed.
