GIS is a tool that allows users to create interactive queries (user created searches), analyze the spatial information, edit data, maps, and present the results of all these operations. Presented below are a few of the software that GIS supports.

QGIS lets you browse and create map data on your computer and it supports vector, raster, and database formats.

Geographic Resources Analysis Support System, commonly referred to as GRASS, is a Geographic Information System (GIS) used for data management, image processing, graphics production, spatial modelling, and visualization of many types of data.
